NOW-REMEMBERED AUSTRALIANS inc IS A PEER SUPPORT ORGANIZATION FOR "STATE CARE" SYSTEM LEAVERS IN THE NORTHERN RIVERS AREA OF NEW SOUTH WALES.

Many hundreds of thousands of Australians experienced institutional or out-of-home care as children in the last century. Many of these people relate stories of severe abuse and neglect during their time in the "care" system.

Children were placed in care for many reasons including being orphaned; being Aboriginal, family dislocation, divorce or separation; being born to a single mother; parental inability to cope; crisis, hardship or poverty. Many were made wards of the state after being charged with being uncontrollable, neglected or in moral danger, not because they had done anything wrong, but because circumstances made them "status offenders".

WHATEVER THE REASON FOR BEING PUT INTO CARE, IT WAS NOT THE CHILD'S FAULT.

Many people still live with the effects of their time in these institutions. It is a shameful history that affects people from various cultural bakgrounds; Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians, and English and Maltese child migrants were all placed in Australian children's institutions.

In his National Apology to the Forgotten Australians and Child Migrants speech on November 16, 2009, Kevin Rudd said that he hoped these people would now be known as the Remembered Australians.

Now-Remembered Australians (NRA) is a group of care leavers from the Northern Rivers area of NSW who come together for mutual support, sharing of strength and communication with people from similar backgrounds.

NRA aims at being a positive experience for those involved, capitalizing and focusing on the strengths and abilities of its service users rather than on their past experiences.

Transcripts of the various apologies can be found through the "Links" section of this site.
